I am an
avid reader. I
prefer science fiction and fantasy,
particularly the work of Neil Gaiman, China Mieville, Nick
Harkaway, Neil Stephenson, Jeff Vandermeer, and the
like. I've been known to read while I walk.
I love to sing! As an undergraduate I helped start an a
cappella group, sang in the college choir and chamber
choir, and participated in many musicals and
revues. As a graduate student I don't have the time to
engage in quite as many musical activities, but I'm a
member of the local a cappella
and I write and perform parody songs at departmental
games with my labmates. We play
everything from light party games (e.g., Coup, The
Resistance) to games that end up taking five or six hours
to play (e.g., Arkham Horror, Battlestar
Galactica). However, my favorite is probably Dominion,
which my girlfriend and I play quite a lot of. I also
dabble in board game design.
I also enjoy solving and
have created several crosswords with co-creator George
Barany, which can be found alongside many other excellent
George's website. I
also created puzzles for the "Fun and Games Night" at AAAI 2015.
Finally, I enjoy nerding out about craft beer. I have
recorded over 1500 ratings, and have created a
series of maps analyzing craft beer density in various
American cities. My two blog posts detailing these maps
I'd like to provide a list of links I find useful, and
that others might find useful. The links below are
sorted in decreasing order of relation to academia and
research. As is always with this sort of thing, YMMV.
